FORK Social Lab

“I believe that when a culture allows itself to include food as one of life’s great pleasures, the people will find pleasure more easily and fully in other aspects of life.”
Rene Redzepi, Chef/Co-Owner of Noma in Copenhagen

I deeply believe in the power of food to equalize, connect, chart new territory and honor tradition. I grew up in the Midwest, eating fresh-from-the-field corn on the cob [still a favorite] and the food of America’s heartland. Many of my friends’ families were farmers and I learned at a young age, the beauty and provision of farmland. I also had the food and cultural influences of Brooklyn – Bay Ridge to be exact – when at the time, it was a thriving Italian community of immigrants, of which my paternal grandmother was one. The Italian culture is built around food. For Italians, food has always been the jumping off point of relationship, connection and meaningful experiences. This is why so many of us revere the Italian way of life.

Now, especially in an age of such technology-driven interactions, nothing can replace the table as an earnest reason for gathering, a place of true, authentic connection and sense of community. I opened FORK Social Lab in the summer of 2011, in a charming, late 1800’s house on Main Street in Louisville – a food-centric hub in Boulder County – with the intention of creating opportunities for just this kind of connection, hospitality and community. Over the course [pun intended!] of two years, we conceptualized and hosted over 35 events, showcasing the talents of the area’s best chefs and purveyors.

We’ve done everything from a Festive Feast at Denver’s urban winery, Infinite Monkey Theorem, and a multi-course dinner featuring Hosea Rosenberg [Winner of Top Chef, Season 5 / Owner of Boulder’s Blackbelly Catering] to sushi-making at TAG Raw Bar and cocktail-making at The Bitter Bar. We even took a group to Alex Seidel’s Fruition Farms in Larkspur to pet the goats and make some cheese. Now we use FORK in name only, as the platform to continue creating community and telling stories we feel matter, rooted in our online presence, taking an active role on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, as well as here on Hungry.
